![]() Key track: “Ashes Of Our Forever” 76: Michael Brecker: Pilgrimage (Heads Up) In the last decade, he has consistently pushed the jazz envelope with albums like the politically charged The Emancipation Procrastination, which fuses alt rock, African music, hip-hop and ambient flavors to arrive at a sound that defies pigeonholing and which Adjuah describes as “Stretch Music.” The inaugural release in his acclaimed Centennial Trilogy, the album offers an immersive listening experience that is a stunning showcase of the horn blower’s polyglot style where his mournful, elegant trumpet melodies are framed by a blend of filmic soundscapes and stuttering trap grooves. Though the history of jazz can be heard in his trumpet playing – from the brash ebullience of Louis Armstrong to the introspective melancholy of Miles Davis and the incandescent virtuosity of Dizzy Gillespie – this New Orleans musician has created a unique and unclassifiable musical hybrid. Key track: “How High The Moon” 77: Christian Scott a Tunde Adjuah: The Emancipation Procrastination (Ropeadope/Stretch Music) Such is Tatum’s genius that he transforms his source material into virtuosic mini concertos, packed with dizzying melodic cascades, inventive substitute chords, and piston-like left-hand accompaniments. It featured his first four studio sides – including wonderfully flamboyant renditions of “Tea For Two” and “Tiger Rag” – augmented by scintillating live recordings recorded at LA’s Shrine Auditorium from 1949. The 1968 compilation, Piano Starts Here, offers a rewarding snapshot of Tatum’s jaw-dropping technique and sparked a revival of interest in Tatum’s music twelve years after his death. Key track: “Carlos” 78: Art Tatum: Piano Starts Here (Columbia)įrom Toledo, Ohio, the visually impaired Art Tatum set an impossibly high bar for jazz piano playing between 1933, when he made his first recordings, to his death in 1956. A scintillating contemporary take on big band, and one of the greatest jazz albums of all-time. ![]() The set’s highlights include the pent-up symphonic opener, “Carlos,” oscillating between tension and resolution, and “Out Of The City,” which exudes a metropolitan swing feel. The contrast between Scofield’s acerbic, gnarly guitar lines and the pointillistic detail of Mendoza’s orchestrations offers a juxtaposition of tones and textures that is thrillingly dramatic. Leading Holland’s redoubtable Metropole Orkest, in 2010 Mendoza invited US jazz-rock guitarist Scofield to guest on 54, which presented seven widescreen adaptations of tunes from Scofield’s back catalogue as well as two original numbers. Six-time Grammy winning American arranger Vince Mendoza is renowned for his collaborations with pop and rock acts (Björk, Joni Mitchell) but he’s also worked his magic with jazz performers. Key track: “Bright Size Life” 79: Metropole Orkest feat. Over the course of Metheny’s career, he would go on to make far more ambitious albums but Bright Size Life stands out for its winning combination of youthful energy and masterly assuredness. What resulted was a thrilling showcase for Metheny’s clear-toned, flowing virtuoso style which was defined by elliptical melodic filigrees, liquid improv and flights of untrammeled lyricism. Metheny was just 21 and teaching at Boston’s Berklee School of Music when ECM producer Manfred Eicher, who had heard him play with vibraphonist Gary Burton’s group, recorded the young guitarist with fretless bass maven Jaco Pastorius and drummer Bob Moses. Largely ignored and selling barely 1,000 copies on its release in January 1976, the Missouri guitar magus’ debut jazz album gradually grew in stature and went on to be regarded as a post-bop masterpiece. They marry and have twins, Little Dragon and Little Phoenix. Lee has persuaded a billionaire wellness entrepreneur named Doug Pince (David Torok) to seduce Lotus. ![]() Dragon Spring apparently holds the key to longevity. If you prefer some details: In the first act, Grandmaster Lone Peak (David Patrick Kelly, a Broadway veteran) and his scrappy daughter Little Lotus (Jasmine Chiu) are betrayed by Lone’s right-hand man Lee (Dickson Mbi), who wants to take over the Dragon Spring, which Lone and his ancestors have protected for generations, through a secret sect called the guardians of the House of Dragons, with branches all over the world, including Flushing, Queens, where the play takes place. All you really need to know: It’s a fight between good and evil, over two generations, and (spoiler alert) good triumphs. It’s best to think of the show as dance theater, and forget about the story, which doesn’t make much sense even if you can actually follow what’s going on. In that spirit, allow me to acknowledge that, yes, “Dragon Spring Phoenix Rise” is too long, too confusing, in places tedious, in other places overwrought and even creepy its silvery and spandex costumes look like a mix of 1950s sci-fi movie and 1970s disco its songs are paltry and its underscoring persistently annoying – New Age ambient pounding that cries out “We don’t trust that you’ll find what’s going on dramatic.” HOWEVER, amid the awfulness there are a scattering of impressive moments - of visual splendor, awesome stagecraft, and exciting dance and martial arts choreography… enough of them to make me glad that I can say I saw this first theatrical spectacle in The Shed’s inaugural season.īackground: PeiJu Chien-Pott (Little Lotus), left: Ji Tuo (Little Dragon), right: Jasmine Chiu (Little Phoenix). ![]() I quote Poots in my article for TDF Stages about “Dragon Spring Phoenix Rise,” which Poots is calling a kung fu musical. It all goes back to a post-war political smear campaign. If you want to understand how it works completely, check out this great resource on. A few states, like Pennsylvania, have additional laws on the books regarding automatic knives, in addition to the federal law, which is a complicated, self-contradictory piece of legislation. That federal law restricts the commercial sale of automatic knives across state lines, with certain caveats. More than 60 years ago, the federal government passed the 1958 Federal Switchblade Act, which prompted a lot of states to impose regulations on these types of knives, which were extremely common before and during WWII. There is a legal stigma against automatic knives that goes back decades, even though many would argue they are not practically different or more insidious somehow than any folding knife. Legally, both terms refer to “any knife having a blade which opens automatically by hand pressure applied to a button or other device in the handle of a knife, or by operation of inertia, gravity, or both.” ![]() The term “automatic knife” and “switchblade” are nearly interchangeable. “By removing automatic knives from Pennsylvania’s definition of ‘offensive weapons,’ HB 1929 would: (1) allow Pennsylvania retailers and manufacturers to sell these knives like their competitors do in neighboring states, benefiting the state’s economy and (2) allow residents of Pennsylvania to use and own these knives, including outdoors enthusiasts like hikers, hunters, and boaters, as well as tradespeople like contractors, roofers, landscapers, and mechanics, who in 44 other states, use these knives daily for their jobs and outdoor activities.” Martin Causer introduced legislation that would decriminalize the possession and use of automatic knives. 1/14/2024 0 Comments Free classic solitaire onlineIt’s mobile friendly too, so you can play anywhere. If there are no cards to be placed in the foundations, the player can draw a card (or three cards, depending on which variant of the game the player chose) from the stock in the top left corner of the game board or can manipulate cards already on the board. The player moves cards by mouse using the drag-and-drop technique, that is by clicking a card and holding a mouse button while moving mouse together with a card to the new location, where releasing the mouse button releases the card. You can choose to either banish any monster from the field or graveyards, or negate the monster that activated its effect. Each of these can be used once during that turn. This works when the opponent has a field spell as well! Secondly, whenever another zombie activates their effect, Balerdroch can use one of two powerful abilities.
